A DePuy hip recall of their hip implant system was announced by DePuy Orthopedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, in September 2010. This recall included the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Resurfacing System. The ASR Resurfacing System was only sold outside of the United States, but the ASR XL Acetabular System was sold globally.
How do I know if I have DePuy hip and am subject to the recall?
If you had hip surgery before July 2003, then your hip replacement is not part of the DePuy hip system recall, because this system only became available after July 2003. If you had your hip replaced after July 2003, you should contact your Medical Doctor or the hospital where the surgery was performed and see if you received the DePuy ASR hip.
Why was the DePuy hip recall implemented?
The DePuy hip recall was issued because the research revealed that approximately five years after the patient received the DePuy hip implant, 12% of these patients who had received the ASR Resurfacing System and 13% of these patients who received the ASR total hip replacement had to have it replaced.
What problems can occur in the first five years?
Patients who received these faulty hip implants complained of pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. If you have just had hip replacement surgery these are normal symptoms, but if these symptoms continue, it could mean that the hip did not remain attached to the bone in the correct position, that the implant broke, or that the parts of the implant became dislocated. Common complaints about the recalled hip implants include: infection, fracture, dislocation, as well as metal leaking into the patients hip tissues. Recent research has shown that the metal may leak toxic debris into the patients hip tissue and cause nerve damage and or tissue damage. If you are experiencing these signs and symptoms with your DePuy hip replacement, see your Medical Doctor.
What should I do if I have a DePuy ASR Hip?
You should schedule an appointment with your Medical Doctor for an evaluation. Your Medical Doctor may order diagnostic tests to determine how your hip is functioning.
